Kalua

Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 2000, Kalua studied in the Department of Crafts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, before leaving the program, and is currently enrolled in the correspondence course at Keio University.

Centering on the fundamental themes of life and death, Kalua expresses both the vitality and fragility inherent in living beings through acrylic painting. In the artist’s representative “Flower” series, first presented in 2024, flowers serve as symbols conveying a wish for peace.

In recent years, Kalua has expanded their practice through works exploring the very act of being alive, while also experimenting with new forms of communication such as sharing videos of the creative process on social media. As a next-generation painter, the artist has attracted particularly strong support among younger audiences.

In 2022, Kalua received the Encouragement Award at the 21st National 0/SM Public Competition. Recent group exhibitions include “New Kyoto IMA KYOTO” (Galerie Taménaga Kyoto, 2025) and “Merry Cherry Blossom” (Galerie Taménaga Kyoto, 2026).
