Yui Komatsumoto

Born in Mie Prefecture in 1993, Yui Komatsumoto completed a Master’s degree in Oil Painting and Printmaking within the Fine Arts and Crafts program at Kyoto University of the Arts (formerly Kyoto University of Art and Design).

The layered patterns that appear throughout Komatsumoto’s paintings are created using a technique combining oil and acrylic paint known as tarashikomi. These formations are inspired by Detroit Agate, an artificial mineral accidentally formed in American automobile factories. Variations in the width of the color layers, produced through the viscosity of the paint, together with additional markings applied after drying, are transformed into Komatsumoto’s distinctive visual language.

Ranging from strikingly stylish compositions to melancholic works that evoke emotional fluctuation, Komatsumoto freely navigates between motifs and moods, conveying the quiet yet resilient will of people living through the present day.

Komatsumoto was selected for the FACE 2020 Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Art Award Exhibition. Recent group exhibitions include “New Kyoto IMA KYOTO” (Galerie Taménaga Kyoto, 2025) and “Merry Cherry Blossom” (Galerie Taménaga Kyoto, 2026).
