About

Galerie Tamenaga Tokyo is pleased to present Naoya Egawa Solo Exhibition, from February 14 (Sat) to March 22 (Sun), 2026.

This exhibition marks Egawa’s first solo exhibition in Japan, following the remarkable success of his debut solo show held at Galerie Tamenaga Paris in 2023, where all exhibited works were sold out. The exhibition drew considerable attention and captivated European art enthusiasts, establishing Egawa as a promising young artist. We are delighted to introduce his work to a Japanese audience at our Tokyo gallery.

Egawa studied Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) at Kyoto University of Art and Design. After graduating, he pursued his own sensibility within traditional forms such as ink painting, fusuma paintings, and folding screens. Seeking an ideal landscape, he later relocated his base to Nagano, where he depicts the rich natural scenery of the region through the changing seasons. His works are created through a meticulous process: gold leaf is applied around the branches of trees and partially scraped away, followed by the careful layering of mineral pigments. Through this technique, slender branches shimmer against the sky, and translucent leaves emerge, revealing scenes of remarkable clarity and serenity.

While his subject matter is nature itself, Egawa’s paintings simultaneously evoke subtle fluctuations of emotion and memory within the viewer. His lucid powers of observation are quietly conveyed through the intricate depiction of branching forms and the nuanced gradations of deep mist. The natural landscapes within his paintings take on an almost sacred presence, inviting viewers into an immersive experience as though standing within the scene itself.

Egawa’s expressive ability and refined sensibility have attracted attention from an early stage of his career. In 2013, he received the Special Prize and Fukuchiyama Mayor’s Award in the Nihonga category at the 13th Sato Taisei Award Exhibition. In 2019, he was awarded the Encouragement Prize at the Yamatane Museum of Art Nihonga Award. He is widely regarded as one of the most promising young artists of his generation.

This exhibition brings together approximately 25 new works created by Egawa during his time in Nagano. Filled with a sense of stillness and the passage of time, the exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to fully immerse themselves in his unique worldview. We sincerely invite you to take this opportunity to experience his work and look forward to welcoming you to the gallery.
