About
Opening reception in the presence of the artist: May 16 (Sat) 4:00pm – 6:00pm
Galerie Tamenaga is pleased to present PERPETUAL FLOW — The Ever-Circulating Stream of Life, the first solo exhibition of Yurika Kinoshita, on view from May 16 (Sat) to June 14 (Sun), 2026.
This exhibition introduces a new body of work in which Kinoshita explores the ever-changing nature of life and the natural world through the motif of flowers and floral landscapes.
Born in 1988, Kinoshita grew up on the Shiroishi Plain in Saga Prefecture, a region blessed with a warm climate adjacent to the Ariake Sea. Nurtured in this environment, her rich sensitivity gradually led her toward art. She studied spatial design at Kyoto University of Art and Design and Musashino Art University.
A defining theme of Kinoshita’s work is the landscapes preserved in her memory. Raised in a family of flower growers, she spent her childhood surrounded by blossoms, deepening both her understanding of and affection for them. Sweet peas spreading delicately across the canvas and large-scale tulips rendered with striking presence are among the vivid floral motifs that characterize her work. Enveloping these flowers are tranquil natural scenes that quietly reside within her memory—clear blue skies glimpsed between petals and leaves, the shimmer of sunlight, and even the faint fragrance carried on the breeze. Her canvases are filled with the fresh pulse of life.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Kinoshita’s practice is her unique technique of painting without brushes, using instead her hands and arms. Scooping up generous amounts of paint with her palms, she transfers it directly onto the canvas, sometimes moving swiftly, at other times slowly, allowing her body to guide the flow of color.
To achieve her vibrant compositions, Kinoshita places great importance on not premixing colors. She takes pure pigments directly from paint containers and applies them onto the canvas, layering additional colors before the previous ones dry. By stretching and spreading them simultaneously with her hands and arms, the colors remain distinct, forming lines and bands within a single stroke and creating a rich visual rhythm. While incidental blending does occur in this process, the resulting mixtures do not dull into darkness; instead, they generate new tonal variations and expressions. Rather than constructing predetermined forms, her work emerges through surrendering to the movement of paint and the rhythm of the body. In this way, her paintings attempt to embody the continuous and interconnected flow of life itself.
Through vibrant color and dynamic movement, Kinoshita expresses the perpetual flow of life. We warmly invite you to experience approximately 30 new works created for this exhibition and immerse yourself in her world.
