Launched in 2022, Ima Kyoto was conceived in Kyoto—an enduring center of Japanese culture and history—with the wish to share the vitality of emerging Japanese artists connected to the city, and to present works that may continue to inspire audiences for generations to come.

This year’s exhibition brings together four remarkable artists: Kalua, Yui Komatsumoto, Masayoshi Nōjō, and Chiharu Yakushigawa.

Kalua explores the dual themes of life and death through the motif of flowers, expressing both their vitality and fragility while conveying a heartfelt prayer for peace.
Yui Komatsumoto reflects on her own experiences through the patterns of artificial gemstones known as Detroit agates, questioning the nature of identity and existence.
Masayoshi Nōjō evokes the ethereal beauty of mirages and auroras in silver leaf, awakening visions of nature that lie dormant within our subconscious.
Chiharu Yakushigawa, painting with her hands and feet, creates vibrant compositions where diverse colors merge yet coexist in harmony, expressing the richness of coexistence.

Through their works, these four young artists capture the sensibilities of our time—the “now” that defines contemporary Kyoto.

Kyoto continues to attract countless visitors from Japan and abroad, drawn by its profound cultural and historical heritage. Yet beyond its temples and timeless traditions lies a living, evolving art scene, enlivened by the creativity of a new generation. Perhaps a thousand years from now, the works of these artists will shine somewhere in Kyoto.

We invite you to discover the beauty of New Kyoto 2025, and to experience the unique pleasure of encountering contemporary art that resonates within the timeless spirit of this ancient city.
