Masayoshi Nojo

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1989, Masayoshi Nojo completed a Master’s degree in Nihonga (Japanese Painting) at the Graduate School of Kyoto University of the Arts (formerly Kyoto University of Art and Design).

By deconstructing and reconstructing photographs of forests and natural landscapes that the artist has personally captured, the work reduces specificity to evoke scenes imbued with a sense of familiarity and déjà vu. By combining the traditional decorative technique of applying foil with adhesive—known as inkin—with the contemporary process of silkscreen printing, the artist has developed a distinctive expression in silver leaf that offers viewers a mirage-like visual experience, reflected in the title of the series itself. As the foil continuously shifts in appearance depending on the weather and time of day, the works quietly reveal a serene and contemplative beauty.

Layering metal leaf across the surface and applying silver embellishments using the decorative technique known as inkin, Nojo creates visual experiences reminiscent of mirages—hence the title of the series, “Mirage.” As the silver leaf subtly changes appearance depending on the weather and time of day, the works possess a quiet and contemplative beauty.
